The ceremony which took place Sunday 3rd of April in MGM Grand Garden, Las Vegas has been running since May 4th, 1959; organized by the National Academy of Recording Arts to recognize top acts for their hard work and dedication in creating and releasing music loved by listeners. The ceremony, which has gained world recognition since its inception is annually graced by artistes across various music genres and this year was no exception.

Multi-platinum music groups Maverick City Music and Elevation Worship did not only win their first Grammy at the ceremony, they also made history by becoming the first Gospel group to perform live on the awards broadcast. They took home Best Contemporary Christian Music Album for their 2021 album Old Church Basement.

The group put on an amazing performance on the night with their no.1 hit ‘JIREH’ featuring Elevation Worship


Maverick City Music which was established in 2018 by Tony Brown and Jonathan Jay made their debut in 2019 with the release of 2 extended play; Maverick City Vol.1 and Maverick City Vol. 2, which debuted on Billboard’s Top Gospel Albums chart at number ten and Billboards Top Christian Albums chart at number 35 respectively.


On April 30, 2021, Maverick City Music and Elevation Worship released the album Old Church Basement which charted no. 1 on the Top Christian Albums Chart and the Top Gospel Charts in the United States with nine songs from the album charting in the top 10 of the Hot Gospel Songs Chart. The album also debuted at no.2 on the official Christian and Gospel Albums Chart in the United Kingdom.

History was also made for the gospel industry as Cece Winans bagged 3 awards on the night. The award winning artiste won Best Gospel Album for her album Believe For It which was released on the 12th of March 2021. She also won Best Gospel Performance/Song for her song Never Lost and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song for her song Believe For It from her album with the same name. She has now won a total of 20 Dove Awards, 7 Stellar Awards, BMI Trailblazer, Walk of Fame and 15 Grammy Awards.
