The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has commenced the demolition of buildings found to be encroaching under high tension cables in Accra.

The exercise which is aimed at eliminating people who have established buildings under high tension cables, will affect areas such as Ayigbe Town, Bawaleshie, Adjringano, American House and the areas behind the Royal Fiesta Hotel. It is targeted mainly at encroachers whose activities pose a threat to the GRIDco transmission towers and the lives of the encroachers.

The occupants of these buildings were informed of this exercise in October 2021, as GRIDco in partnership with the District Assemblies and the media carried out sensitization exercises in order to avoid inconveniences.

The first phase of the demolition which has taken place in Bawaleshie and will continue in the coming days, has been received with distaste as the victims claim they were not given prior notice of the demolition exercise and were further prevented from taking their belongings out of their structures or given extra grace period to move out.
