JOE METTLE SPEAKS ON VGMA NOMINATION
Joseph Oscar Nii Armah Mettle better known by his stage name Joe Mettle, is a multi-award winning artiste with several local and international awards under his belt.
He won the Best Male Gospel artiste at the Gospel Trumpet Awards 2016 held in South Africa, Male artiste of Excellence at the African Gospel Music and Media Awards Awards 2018 held in UK, Africa Gospel Male Artisite of the Year, Africa Gospel Afropop Song of the Year, and Africa Gospel Songwriter of the Year at the Africa Gospel Awards Festival 2019 held in Accra, Alternative song of the Year at the Bass Awards 2012 and Best Male Artiste at the RIGA Awards 2016 held in South Africa.
In 2017, he made history, when he was crowned artiste of the year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) becoming the first Gospel Artiste to win that category. He also won the Gospel Artiste of the year and male vocalist of the year at the same ceremony. With several albums released, Joe Mettle is recognized as one of the best gospel acts in Ghana.
March is that time of the year when nominations for the VGMA of the year get published, and Joe Mettle has again been nominated for the “Artiste of the Year” for VGMA 2022. This time, he’s in the same category as King Promise, Kuami Eugene, Sarkodie, Black Sherif and Kidi, who all do circular music.
However, this year’s nomination has sparked some controversy with raggae artiste, Ras Kuuku, who in an interview on the 21st of March 2022 with Andy Dosty on the Daybreak show on Hitz FM, claimed Joe Mettle did not deserve to be in that category.
In response, the artiste said
“There is a criteria they used for the nominations… so if the organisers think you fit that’s what makes them nominate you. There are lots of things that happen at the background and the fact that they are not out there doesn’t mean they are not happening. There is music and there is work and I think I haven’t been posting most of my works here.
Anyone in the category can win. Don’t underestimate anyone. People have those they are rooting for so I can win and anyone else can too”.
In an interview with Fifi Folson after the New Wine concert by MOG on the 20th of March 2022 at the Oil Dome, the award winning artiste commented on his VGMA nomination “ It is always a joy and I always say that, nominations are endorsements and more or less like encouragement, just to say you’re doing great work. Keep doing it. So it’s a joy. When asked If he would like to win, he answered “ Why not? If it comes my way I will take it.”
The award winning gospel artiste is currently working on releasing some singles as well as a tour for the 10th year celebration of “PRAISE RELOADED”. Details will be made available soon.
